I had managed to flirt with the owner to get a discount. The hotel is Melrose Place: all the rooms face in the inner courtyard where there is a pool and a hotub. All the guests are gay. And thre are two porn channels in every room with American porn 24 hours a day. We decided to stay in and have drinks at our hotel. There are only two gay venues in all of Cairns and our hotel is one of them. Apparently the big night to go out is tonight. Beauty and the Labour Market is the title of a new research study by two University professors which found unattractive people get paid 5% to 10% less in all occupations than good looking or attractive people. The study by the University of Texas held demographic and job types constant and concluded that the variable of looks are a key element in earning power. The researchers also controlled variables such as experience and education. Surprisingly, looks are more important for men than women. To put it in dollar terms, ugly people earned $2,600 in reduce pay per year, and pretty boys earned an extra $1,400 a year. For women, being ugly was less costly $2,000 (boobs are boobs) and being good looking only gave them an extra $1,100 and possibly more dinner dates.

Three single guys set out from cold and wintery Sydney for a three hour flight to Cairns, in tropical Queensland. The weather difference was around 10 degrees. Height and weight might also influence productivity through health or self esteem. Still….it sounds like discrimination to me…if you are not attractive you get paid less. If you are tall, good looking..you’ll go far. My grandmother always says that beauty is only skin deep, but true ugliness cuts right to the bone. Translation: A good attitude and hard work can do a lot to overcome the large nose and ears that stick out, but nasty people are just foul.

Another study, found that spending lots of money on makeup, haircuts and fancy clothes did little to improve the perception of people with average looks and did not increase their earning powers. So much for getting a haircut every three weeks! Who’s to blame? Beauty obsessed managers and human resources people? Nope! We are. It seems that customers prefer to work with people who are a bit easy on the eyes. We all like attractive bank tellers, salespeople and waiters. Higher earning power for good looking people comes from customer taste and not employer discrimination.
